One day, my second-grade student and I had a fun time with a famous puzzle!
🧩 The puzzle was about a boat that could only carry two things at a time, and we had to take a goat, a tiger, and a bundle of grass across a river. But there were some rules we had to follow:
The boat can only carry one thing at a time (goat, tiger, or grass).
If the goat and the tiger are left alone on one side of the river, the tiger will eat the goat.
If the grass and the goat are left alone on one side of the river, the goat will eat the grass.
Our challenge was to find a way to get all three things across the river without any problems. 🤔
My clever student had an idea! He said, “Why don’t we take the goat on the first trip. We can hide the goat behind a bush covering it with a thick bedsheet. Then we can bring the tiger as it won’t know goat’s hideout. Then, we can take the grass to the other side.”
I couldn’t help but burst out laughing at his creative solution. 😄 It was amazing to see how a child’s perspective can come up with such unique ideas! And you know what? His idea could actually work!
This experience taught me that children’s imaginations are truly special, and they often have fresh and unexpected ways of looking at things. Sometimes, the simplest ideas can be the smartest ones.

Take the goat across the river and leave it on the other side.
(Leaving the goat alone with the grass on one side would be problematic.)
Return alone to the starting side (leaving the goat behind).
Take the tiger across the river.
(Since the goat is not present, the tiger won’t eat the goat.)
Leave the tiger on the other side, but take the goat back to the starting side.
Take the bundle of grass across the river.
(Leaving the grass and the goat together would be problematic.)
Return alone to the starting side.
Finally, take the goat across the river one last time.
Now, everyone is safely on the other side of the river, and the puzzle is successfully solved! 🎉
The correct solution ensures that the tiger is never left alone with the goat and the goat is never left alone with the grass, eliminating any potential risks. This puzzle is a great exercise in logical thinking and problem-solving skills.
